		<item><title>2012 Annual Budgets</title><description>Each year City of Pickering staff prepare two budgets for Council's consideration.  The Current Budget provides for the daily operations of the City and funds municipal services &amp; programs, and the Capital Budget provides for municipal infrastructure capital projects.

The Council of the City of Pickering will hold a Public Meeting to consider the 2012 Current and Capital Budget and User Fees on Thursday, February 9, 2012 at 9:00 am (and Friday, February 10, 2012 at 9:00 am if necessary) at the Pickering Civic Complex, Main Committee Room, One The Esplanade, Pickering.

		<item><title>Pickering Wins Honourable Mention at Smart Commute Awards</title><description>Last week at the Smart Commute Annual Employer of the Year Awards held in Toronto, the City of Pickering won 'Honourable Mention' for its participation in the Smart Commute Durham program.
 
As the first municipality to join Smart Commute Durham, Pickering won its 'Honourable Mention' award for its efforts in coordinating sustainable commuting options for staff. 		<item><title>Pickering Finishes ‘Top 3’ in Nationwide Sustainability Challenge</title><description>As a reflection of its ongoing sustainability efforts, the City of Pickering came in 3rd out of 60 municipalities participating in the Canada-wide Town Hall Challenge for energy and water use. 		<item><title>The Sporting Life in Pickering </title><description>Pioneer life did not provide much opportunity for recreation or social activities, except for those events that furthered the goals of a family or a community—such as a barn-raising bee.  What leisure activities there were were mostly family-related. Some homes had musical instruments brought from their homes in the old country.  Hand-made toys also might create a diversion. 		<item><title>Pickering Receives its Birthday Present</title><description>It arrived without gift wrap, bows, ribbons, or a card, and there was little fanfare, but Pickering received its gift on time.  The gift is not a permanent one, but its timeliness is welcome.  It is the record book containing the municipality's first council minutes from March 4, 1811, and it is part of the exhibit currently on display in the lobby of City Hall.

		<item><title>Bicentennial Reflection: The Baronet of Pickering - Pickering’s Largest Landowner</title><description>The first property owner in Pickering was Major John Smith, commanding officer at Niagara from 1792-1795. His grant, made in 1795, totalled about 6200 acres in the south of Pickering Township. Shortly after receiving the grant, however, Smith died leaving his lands to his only son, David William Smith.

		<item><title>Bicentennial Reflection: Public Education in Pickering</title><description>In 1816 Upper Canada passed the Common Schools Act, which enabled local citizens to build and operate a school under the direction of "discreet trustees". The first school in Pickering Township to benefit from this provision was a school with William Sleigh as teacher in 1822.
