Pickering is a leading centre
for energy in Ontario. It's home to Ontario Power Generation
Nuclear (OPG), the City's largest employer and one of the
largest electricity producers in North America, Eco-Tec,
Eastern Power's landfill gas generation plant and Intellimeter.
Almost 20% of our labour force is employed in the energy
sector.
As part of our commitment to
attracting and enhancing energy sector investment here, the
City of Pickering proudly participated in the Spring 2005
launch of a proposed office tower to be developed by 20 Vic
Management Inc. on their Pickering Town Centre lands in the
heart of our downtown.
Dubbed the 'Energy Tower', it
will boast over 200,000 square feet of Class 'A' office space
and offer spectacular views of Frenchman's Bay, one of the
largest natural bays along the north shore of Lake Ontario. A
glass-enclosed pedestrian bridge that spans Hwy. 401 will link
the tower with the Pickering GO Train station, offering
convenience for employees.
The wind turbine located on our
waterfront is one of the largest in North America and is an example
of OPG and the City's commitment to green energy alternatives.
Pickering continues to take steps toward becoming a more
Sustainable City. We are developing a plan to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions. We are also committed to creating
sustainable community neighbourhoods.
Together with other Durham
Energy Stakeholders, Pickering partnered with the University of
Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) to launch a Durham
Strategic Energy Alliance
(DSEA) dedicated to fostering an energy-friendly environment
in Durham and ensuring Ontario has sustainable and reliable
electrical energy.
UOIT, the province's first
laptop university, is located in Durham Region. Its Energy
Systems Engineering program focuses on tomorrow's energy
systems and is the first of its kind in Canada. |
