PICKERING -
First in Ontario again!
February 7, 2002
The City of Pickering was a big
winner at the Ontario Marketing Awards of Excellence Ceremony, at
the annual Economic Development Council of Ontario's conference
held at the Toronto Marriott Eaton Centre Hotel last night.
Pickering's "Millennium
Waterfront - Building Community Together" initiative was
recognized in the Product Development Category.
The objective of this initiative
was to share the vision of Pickering's Waterfront Development.
City of Pickering Regional Councillors Maurice Brenner and Mark
Holland created a Power Point presentation in partnership with
Ontario Power Generation and with creative assistance from Citrus
Media. The presentation outlines the story behind the Millennium
Waterfront Project. It depicts the transformation of an unused
waterfront to a unique focal point of our community. In summer
2001, Councillors Brenner and Holland were invited, along with OPG,
to present this initiative at the conference for International
Making Cities Livable Council held in Venice, Italy July 2001. The
City of Pickering has been recognized internationally for this
innovative approach to waterfront development.

the City were Regional Councillors Maurice Brenner, Mark Holland,
and Pat O'Brien, Manager of Public Affairs, Ontario Power
Generation. In accepting this award the crowd of over 500
participants from across Ontario was told, "that in these
challenging times, creative partnerships are critical to
success." This project's real success was in its
partnerships. Two million dollars of the 4.5 million dollars spent
to date came from community partners and government agencies that
wanted to participate in the excitement and transformation of our
community. The project received one of the largest grants in
Canada from the Federal Government's Millennium Bureau of Canada -
a grant in the amount of $340,000.
Congratulations Pickering!

February 2, 2000
The City of
Pickering was the Big Winner at the Ontario Marketing Awards of
Excellence Ceremony at the 43rd Annual Economic Developers Council
of Ontario held at the Marriott Eaton Centre Hotel last night.
With over 200
entries submitted from across Ontario, the City of Pickerings
unique Pickering 2000 AirExpress Plane won the Award of Excellence
for an Innovative Promotional Piece as well as EDCOs
highest award for Best of Show. The Pickering 2000 AirExpress
Plane an 8 seater Piper Navajo Chieftain, painted in the Pickering
2000 colours, was launched in August of 1999. It displays the logos
of the City of Pickering and its co-sponsor Deer Creek Golf and
Country Estates/Glen Cedars Golf Club. The AirExpress Plane is stocked
with promotional information packages on the City of Pickering as
well as a Promotional Mouse Pad. While accepting the awards on behalf
of the Mayor & City Council, Regional Councillor Maurice Brenner,
who was the driving force behind this initiative, told a crowd of
over 500 participants from across Ontario, that the Pickering 2000
AirExpress Plane has flown 700 hours landing in over 97 airports
in Canada and the United States, as far away as Texas, promoting
the City along the way. Already, according to the planes owner
operator, Brian Holden, the joint venture has been so successful
that AirExpress has doubled its employment size to keep up with
demands. Brenner reminded the audience that in these challenging
times it is only through creative partnerships with the private
sector that Cities such as Pickering can compete in the global market
for business, industry and tourism. The City of Pickering - flying
high above the rest.
Congratulations
Pickering!
