Q. Are you available after hours?

A.

Yes, an officer is available for emergencies 24 hours a day including, holidays and weekends.
   
Q. What is an after hours emergency?
A. Animal Services will respond to the following types of emergencies
1. A sick or injured stray dog or cat (no identification)
2. Requests from Durham Region Health Department to quarantine an animal
3. Requests from Durham Regional Police for assistance

For all non-emergency calls, residents should contact us during our regular working hours

   
Q. If I lose my dog after hours, what should I do?
A. Although you may leave a message with our after hours message centre, we recommend that you call us during our next business day to ensure that a lost report is completed. For further advice be sure to check our lost animal page.
   
Q. Where is your shelter?
A. Our shelter is located at 15 Reesor Road, Toronto (north west of the Metro Zoo between Finch and Steeles Avenue).
   
Q. Who do I call if I see a dog locked inside of a car and am worried about its safety?
A. The Humane Society of Durham Region is responsible for handling situations where the animal may be in distress or its welfare is being compromised.
   
Q. Why does Animal Services offer dog obedience classes?
A. Pickering Animal Services believes in actively promoting responsible pet ownership. Eventually it is our plan to incorporate our obedience classes into the dog adoption fee.
   
Q. Does Pickering Animal Services offer private training along with the group obedience classes?
A. No, Animal Services is only offering group lessons. Be sure to check for our upcoming classes.
   
Q. Does Pickering Animal Services take care of wildlife?
A. The City of Pickering has entered into a 1-year service agreement with the Toronto Wildlife Centre to provide wildlife services for the residents of Pickering. Please see our Wildlife Link.
   
Q. Does PAS pick up stray cats?
A. No. Pickering Animal Services will only pick up sick or injured stray cats.
Currently we are not in a position to accept healthy or owned cats. If you have a stray cat issue, please do not feed them. For more information please visit our Nuisance Cat Link.
   
Q. Who do we report animal bites or scratches to?
A. If you have been bitten or scratched by an animal we suggest that you first
visit your doctor. Your doctor will automatically file a report to the Durham Regional Health Department. If you would like us to investigate the situation further, please ensure that a report has been filed. For more information visit our Dog Bite Link.
   
Q. Does my cat have to be on a leash if outside?
A. Yes. The City of Pickering's Cat and Dog Bylaw states that no animal may
run at large within the City. If you choose to put your cat outside it must be on a leash or enclosed in your yard. In addition, all cats must be licensed with the City on a yearly basis.
   
Q. If I see a dead animal on the road, who do I call?
A. Animal Services will pick up and dispose of all dead animals.
   
Q. Is it Animal Services job to just issue tickets?
A. No. Pickering Animal Services is dedicated to educating owners about
their pets, and teaching them responsible pet ownership. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have; by laws, behaviour issues or training.
   
Q. My neighbour never picks up after his dog, what should I do?
A. We suggest that you first speak to your neighbour about your concern maybe they are unaware of the bylaw. If this does not work please contact us with the following information:
· Address of where the dog resides
· Day/time that you witnessed the incident
· If it is re-occurring we suggest that you try to take a video and/or photograph of the situation. (this would be used if we decide to pursue charges)

An Animal Service officer will visit the dog owners and educate them about the laws.
