GARBAGE COLLECTION & WASTE MANAGEMENT

Overview

Responsible waste management is important as it deters wildlife from entering residential neighbourhoods, maintains clean and appealing properties and provides for an effective system of collection which protects and preserves the environment.

What you should know…

The City’s Waste Management By-law requires that homeowners place their garbage at the curb side no earlier than 6:00 pm on the day immediately preceding the designated collection day, and no later than 7:00 am on the day of collection.

Garbage must be placed in smooth surfaced containers weighing less than 23 kilograms (50 pounds) or in heavy-duty plastic bags weighing less than 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Recycling is to be placed in a blue bin or another returnable container approved in the Region of Durham's Recycling Guidelines. Compostable materials are to be placed in the green bin provided by the Region. Yard waste is to be separated and set out in an acceptable container such as a paper yard waste bag. Sticks, branches and tree limbs are to be securely tied into bundles less than 1 meter in length.

Any waste or garbage which is not collected for any reason should be removed from the curb side prior to 8:00 pm on the designated collection day.

The following list is a brief overview of some materials which are not collected by the Region’s waste contractor. The majority of these uncollectable materials can be disposed of at the Miller Waste Transfer Station located at 1220 Squires Beach Road, Pickering, Ontario  905.426.4222.
