By-law Guide for Pickering Residents

HOME BASED BUSINESSES

Overview

The City of Pickering encourages and supports the growth of home based businesses. Council adopted a by-law which permits a business to operate legally from a permanent residence with certain limitations.

What you should know…

The City of Pickering licences home-based businesses and sets out rules and procedures they must follow. It is advisable that all home-based business owners obtain a licence. The licence recognizes the business and permits its operation in the City.

A “home based business” is defined as an accessory business or occupation conducted in a dwelling unit by a resident of that dwelling unit. The business or occupation must be clearly subordinate to the primary residential use of the unit, and must not create a public nuisance or adverse effect on surrounding lands or in the neighbouring community.

A home based business must be conducted entirely within a residential dwelling unit with no outdoor storage or display, with the exception of one sign for identification purposes. Additionally, a home based business may only occupy 25 percent of the finished floor area of a dwelling unit, to a maximum of 50 square meters.

Pick-ups and deliveries to the home based business must take place between 6:30 am and 8:00 pm.

One sign is permitted to identify the home based business. The sign can not be internally-illuminated, may be located on an exterior wall or door of the dwelling unit, and must be less than 800 square centimetres in size.

Prohibited Uses

The following are some of the types of businesses which are prohibited from operating as a home-based business:

  • animal hospital / veterinarian clinic
  • heavy machinery repair, sales or service
  • kennel / animal boarding service
  • restaurant (any type of eating / drinking establishment)
  • retail store or wholesaling
  • taxi service
  • vehicle repair, sales or service (including audio / video equipment)
