Pickering Helps Make Dollars and Sense of Province’s FIT Program

Pickering, ON, August 4, 2010 – As part of its Sustainable Pickering program, the City of Pickering has posted easy-to-understand information on the Ontario Power Authority’s Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (FIT) program, so that residents and businesses can better navigate through the ins and outs of participating in the Province’s green energy strategy.

Through this innovative program, businesses and homeowners have the ability to generate renewable energy through Solar PV, Wind, Waterpower, and Bioenergy; feed the generated energy back into the electrical grid; and get financially reimbursed. Essentially, the Feed-in Tariff program establishes a tariff rate which generates a payment based on the number of kilowatt hours of renewable energy generated.

While the premise of the program is simple, there seems to be an overwhelming amount of information out there. As such, the City wanted to facilitate participation by reorganizing and relaying the information in a relevant and concise manner for its residents and businesses. FAQ’s, industry links, community links, and other key information on the FIT program can now be found at sustainablepickering.com. In addition, Pickering’s Building Services division is ready and willing to meet with interested parties at no cost to discuss any proposed renewable energy installations.

“As Chair of the Sustainable Pickering Advisory Committee, I encourage all of our residents and businesses to get involved in this innovative program. Visit the Sustainable Pickering website to learn how to participate in the FIT program along with many other meaningful initiatives,” said Doug Dickerson, City Councillor, Ward 2. “The City of Pickering has embarked on a journey to become the most sustainable city in Ontario. As such, it’s important that we provide our residents and stakeholders with the right knowledge and tools so that they may also participate in our sustainability journey.”
