Pickering Receives $50K Grant to Kick Start Its ‘Kick Start’ Program

Pickering, ON, August 11, 2010 – The Ministry of Health Promotion has provided a $49,940 grant to help launch the City of Pickering’s innovative and collaborative ‘Kick Start’ program for youth.

The City of Pickering has partnered with the Pickering Soccer Club and the Ajax Pickering Football Club to develop this two year program which will promote fitness and making healthy choices among youth - ages 11 to 15 years. The ultimate goal is to get more youth involved in sports and fitness, while making the right lifestyle choices for long-term health and wellness.

Kick Start is comprised of three components: Health for Life; Fitness for Life; and Knowledge is Power. The first phase of the program is expected to roll out by October 2010, and will be operated out of the Pickering Recreation Complex by City staff.

“I am very proud that our community has come together to create this program for our youth. It’s truly indicative of Pickering’s renowned community spirit,” said Mayor Dave Ryan. “I thank the Ministry of Health Promotion for its investment in our youth, which will help make for a more healthy and vibrant community.”
