PICKERING
RESIDENT RECEIVES
THE GOVERNOR GENERAL'S CARING CANADIAN AWARD
On behalf of Her Excellency the
Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean, Governor General of Canada, His
Worship David Ryan, Mayor, City of Pickering presented the
Governor General's Caring Canadian Award, to Alfred (Scotty)
Ramage of Pickering on Monday, April 30, 2007 in the Council
Chambers of the Pickering Civic Complex.
The Caring Canadian Award consists
of a certificate and lapel pin; and is presented to individuals
whose unpaid voluntary contributions provide extraordinary help or
care to people in the community. The award symbol represents
Canadians who selflessly give their time and energy to others. The
maple leaf symbolizes the people of Canada and their spirit. The
heart depicts the openheartedness of volunteers and caregivers.
The helping hand and heart support the maple leaf. The hand is
outstretched to portray boundless generosity.
Alfred Ramage, better known in the
Pickering community as "Scotty", has spent his life
helping people of all ages. Scotty Ramage can always be relied on
for help, especially in unfortunate circumstances and emergency
situations. As a member of the St. John Ambulance Brigade for 35
years, he excels in providing first aid at local arenas and
community functions.
In addition, Mr. Ramage has also
volunteered with the Salvation Army, the Royal Canadian Legion and
a local nursery school. His devotion towards youth motivated him
to coach hockey for 40 years and to help establish a drop-in
centre in South Pickering. "No one embodies Pickering's
renowned community spirit more than Scotty," said Mayor Ryan.
"I congratulate him on receiving this most prestigious award
and thank him for his many years of selfless service to Pickering
and its residents."
