Investment
in sports and recreation infrastructure benefits City of Pickering
PICKERING -The residents of
Pickering will soon see improvements to the Don Beer Sports
Facility through an investment announced today under the
Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program.
This investment will make an
important contribution to the quality of life in the community of
Pickering. Dan McTeague, MP for Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge, Janet
Ecker, Ontario Minister of Education and MPP for
Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge, and Wayne Arthurs, Mayor of Pickering,
announced the investment today.
The City of Pickering will renovate
and expand the 32-year-old Don Beer Sports Facility in order to
accommodate the community's need for winter recreational
facilities that are accessible for all members of the community.
The expansion will involve the construction of a third ice rink and
six fully equipped dressing rooms. The Facility will also be
renovated to ensure that it complies with health and safety
regulations and provides access for persons with disabilities.
The Government of Canada through
Industry Canada and the Government of Ontario through SuperBuild
will each contribute up to $587,000 to the project. The City of
Pickering will invest the balance of the project's total cost of
$3,847,360.

"Sport and recreation add to
the quality of life in Pickering," said Mr. McTeague. "I
am pleased to see the Government of Canada, through the
Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program, making this important
investment in our community that will provide access to
recreational activities for all local residents."
"This is very good news for
the Pickering community," said Ms. Ecker. "This funding
further illustrates that the province understands that sports,
culture, recreation and tourism facilities are important
contributors to both job creation and a community's general
quality of life. Through SuperBuild, we are delighted to help the
City of Pickering provide a barrier-free facility where people of
all ages and abilities can participate in sports and leisure
activities."
"These improvements to the
capacity and access at the Don Beer Sports Facility are great news
for the residents of Pickering," said Mayor Arthurs.
"Pickering welcomes the involvement of our federal and
provincial partners and we look forward to this project's
completion."
This is one of a series of matching
federal and provincial investments to help municipalities improve
the quality of life of their residents through essential
infrastructure projects totalling more than $227 million to date
in Ontario. More announcements under the Canada-Ontario
Infrastructure Program are coming.
Allan Rock, Minister of Industry,
and Tim Hudak, Ontario Minister of Tourism, Culture and
