Investment in sports and recreation infrastructure benefits City of Pickering

PICKERING -The residents of Pickering will soon see improvements to the Don Beer Sports Facility through an investment announced today under the Canada-Ontario Infrastructure Program.

This investment will make an important contribution to the quality of life in the community of Pickering. Dan McTeague, MP for Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge, Janet Ecker, Ontario Minister of Education and MPP for Pickering-Ajax-Uxbridge, and Wayne Arthurs, Mayor of Pickering, announced the investment today.

The City of Pickering will renovate and expand the 32-year-old Don Beer Sports Facility in order to accommodate the community's need for winter recreational facilities that are accessible for all members of the community. The expansion will involve the construction of a third ice rink and six fully equipped dressing rooms. The Facility will also be renovated to ensure that it complies with health and safety regulations and provides access for persons with disabilities.

The Government of Canada through Industry Canada and the Government of Ontario through SuperBuild will each contribute up to $587,000 to the project. The City of Pickering will invest the balance of the project's total cost of $3,847,360.
