Clean Air Day
Event Thanks
Pickering - Ajax Commuters for Riding Public Transit
Pickering, June 2nd, 2005 -
Residents in Pickering and Ajax can show their commitment to the
environment by choosing to walk, bike or ride public transit to
work on Clean Air Day - June 8th.
"Although often overlooked,
transportation is the fastest growing source of greenhouse gas
emissions and the single largest source of air pollution in
Canada," said Maurice Brenner, APTA Board Co-Chair and
Pickering Regional Councillor - Ward 1. "The problem is real
and solutions exist. A single bus can carry as many people as 40 -
50 cars. Residents can reduce emissions by changing their
commuting habits."
GO Transit, Ajax-Pickering Transit
Authority, City of Pickering and Ontario Power Generation will
thank commuters for their contribution to a cleaner environment by
greeting them on June 8th at the Pickering GO Station, located at
1322 Bayly St. between 6 - 9 am with music, free coffee &
cookies and other goodies.
People can make a major difference
by riding transit. "These individuals are helping to combat
pollution, smog, air borne emissions and traffic congestion,"
said Mayor David Ryan. "As well, they are helping the 20 per
cent of Canadians who suffer from respiratory problems to breathe
easier."
"Each of us making one small
change in our lifestyle will make a huge impact on our air
quality," said Pat Brown, APTA Board Co-chair and Ajax
Councillor - Ward 4.
Clean Air Day is a national
partnership of government and not-for-profit groups including the
Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), Environment Canada,
Transport Canada, Natural Resources Canada, Federation of Canadian
Municipalities, Go for Green and VIA Rail Canada.
Peter Smith, GO Transit Chairman
explains that "Clean Air Day celebrations are taking place
around the country; the choice to use public transit is helping
Canada to meet its commitments under the Kyoto Protocol. It's an
opportunity to act locally to address a national global
problem."
