Annual Makeover Reveals True City Charm
On Earth Day, Friday, April
22nd, residents, business employees and school children
rolled up their sleeves and turned out in record numbers to
give Pickering a 20-Minute Makeover. When it was all over,
not only was the City's beauty revealed, but so too was the
community commitment of Pickering's citizens.
Pickering was one of eight
leading municipalities around the GTA participating in this
initiative. Similar events were held in Toronto,
Mississauga, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Ajax and
Oakville. "We were thrilled to see how the community
came together to support this initiative," said Chantal
Whitaker, Coordinator, Environmental Awareness Programs for
the City of Pickering. "Per population, we had one of
the highest participation rates amongst all the
municipalities with over 8000 people taking part."
Coordinating an event of this
magnitude would not have been possible without the
tremendous support of our business community. The Beer
Store, Pizza Pizza, Home Depot Canada, Tim Hortons,
McDonald's Restaurants of Canada, TD Friends of the
Environment Foundation, The Toronto Star and The Toronto Sun
joined together to provide and distribute litter collection
supplies, marketing materials and advertising for this
important community initiative.
"Taking care of the
environment is everyone's responsibility," said Mayor
Ryan. "Although the 20-Minute Makeover was an important
first step in the City of Pickering's anti-litter strategy,
we have to promote our message all year round that litter is
just not acceptable."
