Gas & Steam Club Looking for Volunteers

The Gas and Steam Club at the Pickering Museum Village is looking to expand its volunteer base. If you have an interest in antique and historical machinery, the Museum Village has a unique and broad collection dating from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th including many rare vintage tractors and a recently restored steam driven saw mill. Gas and Steam volunteers have a cross section of restoration interests and skills.

Until recently this motivated team has focused their efforts towards two main events: Steam-Up, which kicks off the summer season and is traditionally held the Sunday after the May long weekend, and the Fall Family Festival which is held at the beginning of October. A new, fully equipped, heated workshop permits volunteer work year round, with regular shop hours on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The crew would like to make the collection available to assist the Museum Village's educational efforts and for events throughout the entire season.

Pickering Museum Village exists to illustrate the historical founding, settlement and development of the City of Pickering (formerly Pickering Township) by: Collecting, preserving, housing, exhibiting, and interpreting pertinent artifacts; developing programs responsive to the needs of the community; recruiting and retaining quality staff and volunteers, and strengthening community and association partnerships.

If you would like to tinker with old machinery, and are interested in joining this team of dedicated volunteers call Volunteer & Program Coordinator Mandy Smiles at 905.683.8401 or email msmiles@cityofpickering.com  for more information or to arrange an interview. Volunteer applications are available at the Pickering Museum Village or online at cityofpickering.com/museum .
