Pickering Council
Adopts Anti-idling By-law
Pickering Council, at their
February 16 meeting, unanimously adopted a City-wide anti-idling
by-law prohibiting most vehicles in the City of Pickering from
idling their engines for longer than 5 minutes.
"This initiative of Pickering
Council sends an important message that simple individual actions
can improve local air quality", said Mayor Dave Ryan.
In 2002, the City of Pickering
became an active member of the Greater Toronto Area Clean Air
Council (GTA-CAC), an inter-governmental working group made up of
federal, provincial, regional and city/town representatives
exploring joint opportunities and sharing best practices to reduce
air pollution, smog and related health risks in the GTA. The City
continues to support the actions and activities of that Council.
"The City will continue to
explore ways to educate residents and business owners of ways to
reduce air pollution in order to encourage cleaner air for all of
our citizens and future generations", said Mayor Dave Ryan.
A program to promote and educate
residents and businesses about this by-law is being developed by
the City.
