Makeover Success

Pickering, ON, April 26, 2006 - Residents, schools, community groups and businesses turned out in record numbers to give Pickering a 20-Minute Makeover. Approximately 8500 people took part in the recent initiative, exceeding last year's numbers by 500.

"We were very pleased with the number of people that registered for this event. It demonstrates the level of commitment from within our community to address the problem of litter," said Mayor Dave Ryan.

The 20-Minute Pickering Makeover was part of a larger GTA wide municipal initiative that was sponsored by Pizza Pizza, Home Depot Canada Inc., TD Friends of the Environment Foundation, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun, Tim Hortons and McDonald's Restaurants of Canada.

"The initiative helps to clean up the current litter but it also increases awareness about the problem. A lot of great people donated their time to clean up, hopefully it makes others think twice before they choose to thoughtlessly drop another piece of litter," said Chantal Whitaker, Coordinator, Environmental Awareness Programs.
