Pickering
Champions Recent Makeover
Pickering, ON, April 30, 2007 - On
April 20th, City of Pickering Members of Council, staff and a
record number of residents, schools, businesses, and community
groups rolled up their sleeves and gave our community an amazing
20-Minute Makeover.
Approximately 10,384 people took
part in the recent initiative, exceeding last year's numbers by
1,884. "We are very proud of the people in Pickering that
came out to support this initiative. Events like this one showcase
the pride that we all have for our community" said Mayor
David Ryan.
The 20-Minute Pickering Makeover
was part of a larger GTA wide municipal initiative that was
sponsored by Pizza Pizza, Home Depot Canada Inc., TD Friends of
the Environment Foundation, Toronto Star, Toronto Sun, Tim Hortons
and McDonald's Restaurants of Canada.
"A lot of wonderful people
donated their time to clean up, we encourage everyone to respect
their effort and their community and not litter. With the
difficult issues facing the environment, this is an easy problem
to solve, people of all ages should know better than to
litter", said Chantal Whitaker, Coordinator, Environmental
Awareness Programs.
Litter is not only an issue in the
spring, so throw a party, a Pitch-in-Party that is. Gather your
neighbours, family, workplace, school or association anytime and
clean up a local park, stream, walkway, or neighbourhood. To
assist, the City will provide bags and gloves and even pick up and
dispose of the waste at the end of your event. Call the City of
Pickering at 905.420.4660, ext. 5221 to get involved.
