Resident Wins Lifetime Achievement Award
Pickering, ON, April 25, 2006 -
Recently, the Durham Environmental Advisory Committee hosted a
special reception to present the 2006 Environmental Achievement
Awards. Nominees from within seven categories were honoured for
their contribution to the protection and enhancement of the
environment within the Region of Durham.
Jack McGinnis, a well-known
Pickering resident was awarded the Evylin Stroud Lifetime
Achievement Award. "To celebrate all that this individual has
done for Pickering, Durham Region and the global environment, it
was an honour to nominate Jack for this award," said Chantal
Whitaker, Coordinator, Environmental Awareness Programs for the
City of Pickering.
When advised of his selection, Jack
McGinnis said "I feel very honoured, and hope that I can
continue to properly represent the invaluable contribution made by
local residents like Evylin Stroud."
Over the past 30 years, Jack has
evoked interest and participation across many sectors to develop
programs that have a lasting positive effect on the environment.
His passion, knowledge and innovation are rooted as far back as
1974 when he launched Canada's first multi-material recycling
program. This commitment has continued as he has played central
roles in the development of the Blue Box recycling program and
foundation of the Recycling Council of Ontario, Durham
Environmental Network and Durham Conservation Centre (now known as
Durham Sustain ABILITY).
"Jack is a remarkable
resident; he raised his family here and when he is not
volunteering his time, runs a successful local business,"
said Mayor Dave Ryan. "This award is well deserved as he is a
respected leader in the environmental field and whose expertise is
sought after around the world."
Winners will be formally presented
with their award at a special Regional Council meeting in May.
