Pickering Public
Library Honoured With Minister's Award for Innovation
Pickering, ON, December 29, 2004 -
Today, the Pickering Public Library system celebrated its busiest
year ever when it checked out its one-millionth item for the year.
Mayor Dave Ryan, Library Board
Chair Hans Venleeuwen, and Public Library CEO Cynthia Mearns were
on hand to congratulate library client Laurie Heath for making the
milestone transaction. Laurie also received a commemorative set of
gifts from the City of Pickering and the Library in honour of this
special occasion.
The Library last had this level of
checkouts in 1996. Since then, the Internet has become a major
alternative information source and all libraries have felt its
impact. "The Internet is a great tool, but it cannot replace
the Library and the important role it plays," said Mayor
Ryan. "The Library is the soul of a community and also a
gathering place where people can meet, learn, reflect and explore.
The City of Pickering is proud of the quality and selection of
services that the Library provides to our residents."
In addition to its circulation
numbers, all branch libraries were buzzing with activity
throughout the year. "The walk-in traffic to our libraries is
also at a record high this year, with almost half a million people
coming in to use the workstations, do homework, take out some
books, or attend a story time, book club or other program. Add to
this our online use, and we are very clearly ending our busiest
year ever," said CEO Cynthia Mearns.
The Library Board and staff have
worked hard over the year to meet the needs of a diverse and
growing population and are exceptionally proud of this watershed
moment. "We are very proud of the Library's accomplishments
this year, as they truly reflect the popularity and relevance of
our Library in the community," said Board Chair Hans
Venleeuwen. "We look forward to 2005 and continuing our
tradition of excellence."
