A Pawsitive Night
On Monday September 15, 2008, The
City of Pickering recognized 5 animal related partners for the
City’s first presentation of the Pawsitive Partners Awards
Program.
This past spring the residents of
Pickering were surprised to find at 300 pound black bear roaming
their neighbourhood. The Ministry of Natural Resources was
contacted and a “Bear Wise” team arrived. Through a coordinated
effort the animal was captured and returned to the wild more
than 80 kilometres north of Pickering. An exciting but dangerous
situation that was handled with expertise and professionalism.
The second partner recognized was
the Durham Regional Police Services. Although our police are
often out responding to crime, they always seem to be right
around the corner when Animal Services is in need of their help.
Their Officers assist animal services on a regular basis whether
it is for injured animals, dog bites, deer, bears, or even just
assisting in finding lost or stray pets.
Millennium City Veterinary
Hospital has been a savior in more ways than one. Although
handling wildlife is not a general practice, Millennium
Veterinary Hospital has generously contributed their expertise
to the treatment of sick and injured wild animals. They are the
only clinic in Pickering that will treat wild animals and we at
animal services appreciate their dedicated support.
Since 2006 Pet Valu has donated
thousands of dollars worth of merchandise and food for the
City’s animal shelter. They are a part of each pet adoption by
contributing treats, carriers and toys to each proud new pet
owner. Most recently they have provided the City with
environmentally sustainable reusable bags to be used for
adoptions.
Due to unforeseen circumstances
PetSmart was unable to attend last nights presentation. PetSmart
has played an important role in helping the City of Pickering
staff bring people and pets together by promoting pet adoption.
Lindsey Brenner, Supervisor Animal Services says, “Their
satellite adoption facility has allowed us to find new homes for
over 70 cats”. In addition, PetSmart is a strong supporter for
the various services that Pickering Animal Services is
responsible for.
Since the establishment of
Pickering Animal Services in 2006 City staff has worked
diligently to promote and protect the health, safety and welfare
of animals and people in our community. Lindsey Brenner,
Supervisor, Animal Services says, “We know that it’s not
everyday that these organizations are recognized for their hard
work and dedication and, we wanted to share our appreciation
with the rest of our community.” Animal Services hopes to
present these awards on a yearly basis.
