Mayor Ryan Teams
Up with Community Leaders to Combat Youth Violence
Pickering, ON, October 31, 2005 -
On October 24th, City of Pickering Mayor, Dave Ryan, hosted a
forum with 20 other community leaders to discuss the issue of
youth violence and to brainstorm ideas on preventing it from
taking root in the community.
Chief Vern White and members of the
Durham Regional Police Service were active participants in the
Mayor's forum, as were representatives of the Durham District
School Board, Durham Catholic School Board, and various
faith-based and multicultural organizations. The diverse
backgrounds and expertise of the attendees provided an open,
honest and comprehensive dialogue on this important issue.
At the forum, Chief White debunked
the misperception that youth violence is rampant in the community
and stated that crime rates have not dramatically increased in
Pickering. However, the recent gunplay in Toronto and resulting
media coverage has had a disquieting effect on residents. Youth
violence is a growing community concern and Mayor Ryan takes these
concerns very seriously.
"Pickering remains a safe,
vibrant and caring community - and I will do my best to ensure it
stays this way," said Mayor Ryan. "The City and its
various community organizations are each recognized for their
excellent youth programs and initiatives. However, we can do a
more effective job of engaging youth and reaching those who are at
risk by working together, strategizing on solutions and pooling
our resources."
Last week's forum was the first
step in this new community partnership. The Durham Regional Police
Service, the two school boards and all of the forum attendees
unanimously agreed to continue working on the Mayor's initiative.
Mayor Ryan's goal is to have a draft action plan and new programs
in place by the start of the new year.
