Pickering Public Library Sets a New Record in 2005

The Pickering Public Library system celebrated its busiest year ever when it reached a record of 1,056,965 items checked out in 2005.

Congratulations to the Bain family (Virginia, Brook, Lindsay and Connor) for making the milestone transaction at the Petticoat Creek Branch Library on Saturday, December 31st. The Bains received a commemorative set of gifts from the City of Pickering and the Library in honour of this special occasion.

The Library also set new records online in 2005 with over 300,000 visits to the web site and 30,000 electronic books and magazine articles accessed by our clients.

In addition to the record circulation, the Library was very busy with activities which included a visit from the Lieutenant Governor, a record year for the summer reading program, a new Battle of the Books program, the introduction of wireless internet access, a new computer lab, and several new electronic collections added to further improve services for our remote clients.

Last year the Library passed the milestone circulation of one-million for the first time since 1996. In 2005 we improved on that record by more than 5 percent. Considering competition from the Internet and large chain bookstores, it is wonderful to see that the Library continues to grow in popularity and to contribute to building a successful community in Pickering!
