'Mr.
Pickering' to Retire after Illustrious 40-Year Career
Pickering, ON, March 11, 2010
–Thomas J. Quinn, Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the City
of Pickering, aka ‘Mr. Pickering', has announced his retirement
following 40 years of dedicated service to the municipality.
While Mr. Quinn’s retirement
takes effect on May 31, 2010, he will stay on in a consulting
role until the end of the year. As Special Advisor to the Office
of the CAO, he will mentor the incoming CAO and provide
continued guidance on special projects.
Over the past four decades, Mr.
Quinn has earned the moniker of ‘Mr. Pickering’, due to his
involvement in the majority of Pickering’s key municipal
projects and endeavours, as well as his hands-on collaboration
with an immeasurable number of politicians, staff, residents,
sports clubs, community groups and businesses. During his
tenure, he has held a variety of senior management positions
including Director, Parks & Recreation; Director, Community
Services and Facilities, Executive Director, Operations;
ultimately becoming the Chief Administrative Officer in 1996.
With a broad and diverse list of
accomplishments, Mr. Quinn is most proud of the leadership role
he played in bringing the Pickering Recreation Complex from
concept to reality. Since it opened its doors over 25 years ago,
the Pickering Recreation Complex has won numerous international
and industry awards. More importantly, it became the heart and
soul of a fledgling community, and helped Pickering evolve from
a sleepy little town to a bustling young city.
“What started off as a job for me
40 years ago, developed into a career, and eventually became my
passion. As I embark on this new chapter of my life, words
cannot adequately express how I truly feel about this
organization, and our community,” said Thomas J. Quinn, CAO. “I
have developed many lifelong friendships along the way, and have
always appreciated the support of Council and staff. I will
leave content in the knowledge that we accomplished great things
here, and ultimately laid the foundation for a truly wonderful
community for both families and businesses alike. Moving
forward, I am happy to devote my undivided time and energy to my
family; namely, my wife Charley, my two sons Sean and Ryan, and
my daughter Erin. They are truly the most important part of my
life.
“On behalf of the City of
Pickering and its Members of Council, I would like to sincerely
thank Tom for 40 years of outstanding leadership and service,”
said Mayor Dave Ryan. “He has been instrumental towards the
growth and maturation of the City of Pickering, and his legacy
projects will continue to be cornerstones of our community for
future generations to come.”
Taking over the CAO management
reins of City Hall on June 1, 2010 will be Tony Prevedel, P.
Eng. Mr. Prevedel has been with the City of Pickering for two
years, and has a veritable wealth of municipal, infrastructure
and senior management experience in Canada and overseas.
