Every home and business should have
at least one telephone that does not rely on external electricity
to operate, otherwise they may be left without service when the
power is off. During the 2003 Blackout and other community
emergencies like the 1998 Ice Storm, many people did not have
telephone service even though it was available in many areas.
The use of portable telephones and
handsets that operate with special features like call display have
become very popular, but they require external power to function.
A standard telephone set (one that does not have to be plugged
into an electrical outlet) will work during an electrical outage
because it receives energy from the telephone line itself.
Therefore, everyone should ensure
that at least one standard telephone set is installed and
maintained in case we experience widespread and prolonged
electrical power outages in the future.
