Ball Hockey Program
Ball Hockey Program is designed to help develop hockey skills in a fun atmosphere. Non competitive game play and instruction will be included while the fundamentals of fair play and team work are stressed.

Children's Ball Hockey - 6 to 8 years

Youth Fitness Programs

F.I.T. Club: 13-17 years.  Learn how to best weight train for your body.  Workout time on the treadmills, steppers, elliptical trainers, selectorized machines & free weights included in each class.  Successfully complete the course and be eligible to purchase a Youth Membership at the Rec Complex!   $90.00 for 15 hours. 

Parents:  Enjoy a free Health Club workout while your child is participating in their registered program - call us for details!

Advanced Ticket Packages will be on sale beginning Monday, August 22, 2011 while quantities last.   Advance Ticket Packages can be purchased in person at the Pickering Recreation Complex by cash, cheque, debit, and major credit card.    Minimum package consists of three (3) dances.   Advanced Ticket Packages are not available online. Children's Guitar - Level 1
Learn the fundamentals - such as tuning your guitar, techniques for developing dexterity, basic reading skills, playing simple melodies and chord progressions. You will also gain performance skills. Are you a budding artist?  Then an art class is for you!  Come out and learn the basics of drawing and painting.

Youth Art Beginners
Participants will explore different drawing and painting techniques using a variety of media (i.e. charcoal, pencil, pastel and oils). Subject matter will include animals, landscape, still like and people.  Proportion, shading, basic perspective, colour mixing and painting techniques will be shown.

Youth Art Advanced 
This course is an in-depth extension of the beginners Youth Art. Participants in advanced class will work in the media of their choice, Instruction will be given on an individual basis.

Cartooning for Beginners
Do you like cartoon characters?  Learn starting with the basics, how to create original characters.  Come out and learn a new skill, and see what you can do!

Babysitters Training
Come out and enjoy 8 fun, short evenings with your peers while learning how to be a safe, fun an responsible babysitter for newborns to school age children. We cover topics such as diaper changing, safety, poisons and emergency etc. Learn what to expect within babysitting for the first time and how to enjoy it. Upon successful completion of all assignments and final tests, you will receive a certificate. Please bring a duotang/binder paper and pen/pencil to all classes. Participants must be 12 years old prior to start of the program.

Youth Break Dancing
Techniques for moves you already know or learn how to do brand new moves, this course is a lot of fun. The windmill, flair and new freezes are just a few moves that will be taught - so no matter what level of breaking you are at - come on out.

Mad Science Program System #1
System #1 is designed to stimulate the minds and imaginations of children everywhere. The experience involves hands-on participation combined with awesome demonstrations and experiments. Questions, answers and spectacular demonstrations will amaze all!

Lasers, Rockets, Bubbling Potions highlight the very best of Mad Science. Matter of face, everyone will get to investigate the ingredients of our universe while munching on marshmallow molecules and making their very own Silly Putty! Discover why humans like Acids on their fries, and Bases on their bread. Children will even build and fly their own educational model rockets, which can safely soar to new heights of over 1,000 feet and then return gently to the ground.

Karate, an oriental art of self defence is a great way to achieve a high level of physical fitness.  It also contributes to the development of self confidence.

March Break Camp:

Arts Camp (ages 5-12 years)
This one-week camp is a fun filled week of arts. Campers will have the opportunity to develop new skills and express themselves through a variety of activities (Drama, Art, Creative Games, Crafts and Special theme days). All participants will swim daily at the Pickering Recreation Complex.  Busing Available.

Monday to Friday - 9:00 am - 3:15 pm

Sports (ages 5-12 years)
This one-week camp is designed to enhance basic sport skills. Emphasis on learning and improving skills in soccer, floor hockey, and basketball. Campers will also participate throughout the week with special theme days and indoor games. All participants will swim daily at the Pickering Recreation Complex.

Monday to Friday - 9:00 am - 3:15 pm

Mini Pidaca (ages 3-5 years)
(Must be 3 years of age before the start of the camp, all children must be toilet trained)

This is a fantastic one-week camp, which offers a great learning experience for young children. They will participate in arts & crafts, music and singalongs, indoor games and the opportunity to participate in various theme days planned throughout the week.

Monday to Friday - 9:30 am - 12 noon
Pickering Recreation Complex

Extend-A-Camp - 7:00 am - 9:00 am and 3:15 pm - 6:00 pm - drop off and pick up child at the Creative Centre at Recreation Complex.

The City of Pickering is also offering Extend-a Care for  child(ren) of working parents. Child(ren) can be dropped off anytime after 7:00 am and will be fully supervised throughout each day until 6:00 pm. This camp is only available to those registered in Arts or Sports Camp.

Please ensure that if your child has special needs that require additional staff support, you clearly state this on your form - this will enable your child to have a positive and supported time at camp.  Please check for application deadline dates if your child requires support staff.

Summer Camp:

City of Pickering Camps provide a quality experience for your child. Our goal is for their day to be filled with fun, excitement, an opportunity to develop new friendships and new skills in a safe and supportive environment. City of Pickering Camp staff make the difference!  Our staff are certified with Standard First Aid & CPR-C. All staff have completed courses on the HIGH FIVE Principals of Healthy Child Development, and have gone through Vulnerable Sector Screening with the Durham Regional Police Service. Most of all they are experienced, creative and enthusiastic!

Every summer we offer the following Camp Programs.  Look for our seasonal City Service & Leisure Guide or Click to Reg  for fees, barcodes, more details and this year’s themes. 


 
Mini Pidaca (Ages 3-5)

This half-day camp runs in two-week sessions, Monday to Friday, from 9:30 am to 12:00 pm, and allows your young child to experience a summer camp atmosphere for the first time. They will gain valuable experiences sharing and socializing with other children, creating crafts, playing games, singing and dancing all morning. With our special dress-up days, and our session themes, it’s like a new camp every time.

Note: Children must be toilet trained. Please pack snacks daily for Mini Pidaca. All our camps are peanut-free. Campers must be minimum age at start of camp. Location and Activities are subject to change.

Arts Camp (Age 5-12)

Our Arts Camp offers a wide variety of crafts, games and activities designed to showcase your child's creativity. Arts Camp runs, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 3:15 pm daily. Drama and dance classes will get them moving and interacting with new friends. Swimming Daily. The final Friday of each session is performance day, where parents and guardians are welcome to come and watch our performances. Special theme sessions bring a fresh set of activities each session at Arts camp. Location and Activities are subject to change. Please pack a lunch,  snacks, and drinks daily. All our camps are peanut-free.

Sports Camp (Age 5-12)

GYM Class all summer! Our sports camp offers a wide variety of sports every session for your young athlete. Sports Camp runs in two-week sessions, Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 3:15 pm daily. Basketball, Soccer, Baseball, Hockey, Tennis, Squash, and more! Your child will learn the rules and develop new skills every session. But this is camp, special themes like gladiator day, Olympic week, super star day, and many others keep the whole summer new and exciting. Swimming Daily. Location and Activities are subject to change. Please pack a lunch, snacks, and drinks daily. All our camps are peanut-free.

 
Great Outdoors Camp (Age 5-12)

For the child that loves the outdoors, Great Outdoors Camp will put more of an emphasis on outdoor activities. This camp runs Monday to Friday, from 9:00 am to 3:15 pm daily.  Nature Crafts, outdoor games, camping skills, creek walks and wilderness survival are just a few of the exciting activities your child will experience every day. Swimming on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday every week. Our Special theme sessions will keep things fresh and new, as well as trips each session to Whitevale Park to explore our city’s natural environment.  Location and Activities are subject to change. Please pack a lunch, snacks, and drinks daily. All our camps are peanut-free.

Extend-a-Camp (Age 5-12)

This program is offered before and after our full-day camps for those parents and guardians that need a little more time each day. New games and new crafts ensure no duplication from our full day camps. Please drop off and pick up your child at the Creative Centre / Recreation Complex.  Morning hours are, 7:00 am to 9:00 am, then your camper will be transferred to the appropriate Camp or Camp Bus. The afternoon hours are 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm. Note: offered before and after Arts, Sports, Adventure, and Pioneer Camps only. Late pick-up fee ($20.00) applied to any child picked up after 6:00 pm daily.

Members of the community with special needs are welcomed and encouraged to participate in community programs and activities of their choice. Our goal is to assist in the integration of people with disabilities into programs offered.

Come Play!!!

The combatants room at the Pickering Recreation Complex is open to children with Special Needs, their parents, siblings and friends. "Our Special Place" has soft activity equipment which provides hours of fun, in a caring and safe environment. Children must be directly supervised by an adult at all times.

Day & Time: Sundays 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Admission: $4.50 per family per visit

Durham Regional Police Disabled Children's Games
A fun filled day of competitions including relays / wheelchair rugby / basketball / moonball / bowling etc.  Trophies and medals handed out at the end of the day.  Families, friends welcome to cheer on the athletes!!

This one-day annual event is scheduled for the third Saturday in November, and takes place at the Pickering Recreation Complex.


Ability Online
A website that children and youth with disabilities can use to connect to each other as well as to their friends, family members, care givers, and supporters.

Squash

Beginner Junior Squash Lessons (ages 9-16 years)
Lessons are intended for children interested in learning the basic rules and techniques of squash. A focus on ball and hand-eye co-ordination will be concentrated on.  All equipment is provided with the exception of clean footwear. 

Fee: $75 for the six week session, includes lesson and league play 
        (Lesson only is $60)
      **Fee includes GST, cheques made payable to James Hayes

Racquetball Group Lessons
Racquetball professional Trevor Harrison will be giving, upon request, lessons for people who would like to know how to play the game. You would learn aspects of the game and proper rules, safety eyewear and balls will be provided.

Aquatics
The City of Pickering offers a variety of aquatic programs for kids interested in learning to swim, those wanting to improve their lifesaving skills, and those hoping to pursue leadership opportunities at the pool.

Swimming lessons are offered from Red Cross Swim Kids 1-10 at both Dunbarton Pool and the Recreation Complex Pool, evenings from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm or 8:00 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.

The cost for lessons varies:
$85 for ten 30-minute group classes, Levels 1-5.
$96 for ten 45-minute group classes, Levels 6-10.
Semi-private instruction is available at $155 for ten 30-minute lessons.
One-on-one private instruction is available at a cost of $258 for ten 30 minute lessons.

Bronze Star is the first level in the Bronze family. You will learn to perform CPR, first aid, rescues and swimming for aquatic fitness. This program is an excellent preparation for Bronze Medallion and is aimed at kids aged 10-13 years. A minimum of Swim Kids 7 is required to register in this program and Canadian Swim Patrol experience would help. You will want to get out to the pool to swim some lengths, as there is an endurance swim of 400m or 16 lengths in 12 minutes that must be completed by the end of the course in order for you to be successful. Bronze Star runs for 10 weeks, 1.5 hours per week at a cost of $111.

Registration for all aquatic programs can be completed by submitting a written registration form (found in our program brochures) to our Registration Department at the Pickering Recreation Complex or by Tele-Reg at 905.420.4749.
