Don Beer Arena, named after Donald A.
Beer (1907 - 1969) for his work on the Pickering Township Council,
was built in 1969 as a single rink community facility. The arena was
expanded to a twin rink facility in 1973. In 2002, with the
creation of a partnership between the City of Pickering, the
Pickering Hockey Association, the Durham West Girls Hockey
Association and the Federal and Provincial governments the current arena
expansion began. In February 2003, the official ribbon cutting
took place for the expanded three rink facility.
A 2,829 square meter addition has
been added to create a new 7,984 square meter facility housing a
new 190 foot by 85 foot rink surface. In addition to the creation of
the new rink surface and modern building system, a large part of the
existing building was renovated to address accessibility
issues. The "new" Don Beer Arena has ground level
access, automatic doors, ramps, expanded and upgraded public
washrooms, and a new fully accessible concession area. New heating
and ventilation systems, fire alarm and fire suppression systems replaced the older systems in current use in parts of the
existing building.
