St. Mary
Catholic Secondary School, Learning for Hope
Learning
for Hope was created in 2006 by a group of students at St. Mary Catholic
Secondary School. The driving force behind the group is the desire to
create partnerships with schools in Peru and El Salvador. We do not
provide charity, but build relationships with these communities in order
to help them in helping themselves. We work with people, not for them.
The communities provide us with proposals for long term projects, and
tell us what they need as well as what they can contribute.
An example of this was our greenhouse project in
Sacaca. The people there provided the labour and land, and Learning for
Hope purchased the materials necessary for construction. Sacaca now has
a living, breathing classroom for their students, and the community will
be able to supplement their diet with a greater variety of vegetables.
Learning for Hope holds various fundraising events such as an annual 10k
Walkathon, bake sales, and coin drives. School supplies, used laptops
and soccer equipment are also continuously collected to send to the
ongoing projects. All cash donations go directly to the project, not
administrative costs.
Learning for Hope does not work for people, but
works with them. If you would like to get involved with the project, or
would like to donate, please check out
