Spring
Operations |
A brief description of our Spring
Operations is provided below.
For more information, call
905.420.4660, ext. 5294 between 8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday to
Friday.
Pothole and
Washout Repairs
Municipal Operations
regularly inspects the condition of roads for potholes, which can
develop in a matter of days during the spring thaw. We also
rely on residents and motorists to contact us about potholes and
roadways that have been washed out by heavy rain and other road
conditions.
Grading
and Gravel Replacement
Grading
is an important part of rural road maintenance and involves
reshaping the roads. Municipal Operations also replaces gravel that
has been pushed off the road during our winter operations and/or
swept away during the spring thaw.
Street Sweeping
Program
Each spring, roads are
flushed and swept clean of dirt and winter debris.
Ditching, Cleaning
and Repairs
Roadside
ditches are used in rural areas of the City where there are no storm
sewers. We regularly inspect these ditches, which fill with
vegetation, debris and soil deposited by rainwater. Our
ditching program involves removing this material to create maximum
drainage using our hydroscopic excavator with a special bucket.
Culvert Repairs
and Installations
Each spring, Municipal
Operations inspects, repairs and install the culverts that drain and
channel water that cross under roads, driveways and sidewalks.
Road Sign Repairs
and Replacements
Municipal Operations
regularly inspects road signs, which can be damaged during the
winter and can also be vandalized. Road signs play an
important role in community safety and we encourage you to contact
us about signs that have been damaged or vandalized. We will
repair and/or replace them as necessary. Call 905.420.4660, ext.
5294.
Roadside Debris
and Litter Cleanup
Crews collect litter and
debris along roadways and walkways each spring. The task also
involves cleaning up tonnes of garbage and thousands of used tires
that have been carelessly and illegally dumped along rural
roadsides. You can help fight illegal dumping by reporting any
incidents you may witness. Contact the City's by-law division
at 905.420-4615
Garden Bed
Preparation and Plantings
Each
spring, crews till and prepare garden beds for flowers to beautify
our community.
Spring Fertilizing
The City of Pickering uses
approximately 60,000 pounds of organic fertilizer each spring.
Our fertilizer is derived from natural sources, which is safer for
the environment and is used more efficiently by the plant.
Playground
Inspections, Repairs and Maintenance
A
full-time parks inspector visits playgrounds at the beginning of
spring and throughout the year, to ensure playground equipment is in
good repair and playgrounds are safe. If you witness anyone damaging
or vandalizing equipment or find equipment damaged or unsafe, please
