Winter Snow
Control
Long before the first snowfall City
crews start preparing for the winter season.
This includes transforming dump
trucks into snowplows by affixing winged blades, performing winter
maintenance for all vehicles and changing equipment on smaller
tractors to make them ready for sidewalk plowing. Supplies of sand
and salt must be stockpiled and each year better technology and
systems are used to help keep our roads safe.
The logistics of putting road crews
and equipment out in weather that virtually can bring everyone else
to a stand still requires detailed planning and keeping the process
moving is labour intensive. Streets must be kept clear for use by
fire, police and emergency services as well as business and personal
travellers.
How does it all get done? The
following have been designed to give you the information you need.
Other agencies such as the Region of
Durham, Province of Ontario and the
Federal Government, also have
winter control duties on roads under their jurisdiction, within the
city boundaries.
