Ajax / Pickering Road Watch

Has a bad driver ever cut you off?
Have you ever seen someone drive past a school bus with its signals flashing?
Have you ever seen someone driving too fast or aggressively?

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then Road Watch is a program that may make a difference!

Road Watch is a community-based program that currently exists in many towns and cities throughout Ontario. In fact, Road Watch is already active in the neighbouring municipalities of Oshawa, Whitby, Clarington, and the Township's of Scugog and Uxbridge. Soon all of the municipalities in the Region of Durham will be under Road Watch alert as the Town of Ajax and the City of Pickering have recently adopted the program.

Road Watch is aimed at making drivers more aware of their actions. The program is coordinated by volunteers and is operated in partnership with the Durham Regional Police Service, members of Council and City and Town staff. With your help, we are striving to make your community and city streets safer.

How does Road Watch work?

When you observe a vehicle being operated in an unsafe or aggressive manner, make a note of as much information as you can about the particular driving situation that you witnessed.

If you are able to correctly write down the licence plate of the vehicle, submit it along with any other pertinent information on a Road Watch Citizen Report Form.  Citizen Report Forms can be obtained from our website or at any of the Road Watch drop boxes that are located in various areas of the city.

Citizen Report Form

Vehicle owners who are reported will receive a letter from the police describing the nature of the offence. Owners are encouraged to contact the police to discuss the incident.

If a vehicle owner receives more than one letter, the Ajax - Pickering Community Police Office will make personal contact with the owner.

Citizen Report Forms should be completed with as much detail as possible and must be signed. This helps safeguard the system from abuse. Be assured that any personal information is for statistical use only and is held in strictest confidence.

Please remember that this is your opportunity to help make our streets in Ajax and Pickering safer.

Has Road Watch Been a Success?

YES! Between June 11, 1998 and December 31, 1999, the police received 1,209 Citizen Report Forms in Whitby alone. Incidents such as speeding, careless driving, disobeying stop signs, stopped school buses, school-crossing guards, following too closely, and many other offences have been reported to the police.
